So I noticed upon reviewing some of my site traffic, most of it is centered around my blog. And I haven’t really been keeping it up to date. At all. Ever. BUT. Since I have been blogging for nearly all of 2008 for Latest Beauty, I should be somewhat in the habit of dropping little meandering thoughts daily on my own personal blog. And with that, here we go.

It’s been a bit of a slow summer for me, audition-wise. I haven’t been sent out since May which is a bit of a bummer but hopefully with the fall season full of new shows, my casting opportunities will increase. I’m teaching myself patience. In the meantime, I’ve been taking advanced classes at the Ivanna Chubbuck Studio, which has been the highlight of my summer. I’m learning so much, since this is my first time studying an actual technique, and with Ben Davis as my teacher, I’m sure to continue to grow. I love my classmates and I audit as many of Ivanna’s Masters classes as I can, which keeps me focused.

Two weeks ago I was a contestant on Trivial Pursuit: America Plays, a new game show that starts airing in syndication later this month. I'll let you know my airdate when I find it out.

I got cast in a play! I’m very excited to be giving it my first go in Los Angeles theatre this October. I’m part of the ensemble cast of Tales From the Shadow Zone at Next Stage. Chris Berube is the writer/director/producer behind this show and this is its eighth showing, so it’s got a bit of a following. The show is comprised of 5 storylines that make up one two-hour show and the “tales” are Twilight Zone/X-Files-esque. I am playing Valerie in A Date In Time, which is juicy and fun and involves guns and screaming and time travel. Kooky and crazy, my cup of tea. Perfect for Halloween fun.

I also have a commercial audition tomorrow, so we’ll see where that goes. You never know…

Until then…

PS - I also got new headshots done by Michael Maples earlier this year and I have yet to update the pics on this site. You can see them at my IMDB listing and I'll post them on here tomorrow.

And I'll tell you why:

Wipeout, ABC's newest piece of crap, premiered to 9.8 million viewers on Tuesday making it the biggest summer premiere ever. Which goes to show that people will continue to watch the worst possible tv instead of simply turning it off and doing something else. This is only going to encourage networks to make copycat-shows of Wipeout and for ABC to maybe start airing it three nights a week. INSTEAD of creating quality television with quality shows that quality actors can work on. And I know it's summertime so tv land is fertile for crap tv but this is only going to encourage the networks to put more of this on in the fall. The work for actors is going to become less and less because viewers have seemingly no standards. And us going on strike soon is not going to help anything. Why would the producers care about a strike when they can slap together morons breaking their necks on giant balls and people will watch that? They're not losing money. Why should they care if actors won't work?

Someone renew my hope. Please.

So you may know that I was contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Yes, the last time I wrote I had just passed the test. Well fast forward two weeks later: I received a call to see if I was ready to play and I eagerly said yes! I shot my episode Thursday, August 16th, and while I am not legally able to tell you anything in regards to my turn playing, I can tell you everything leading up to the hot seat… So for all you inquiring minds, here you are:

I was psyched for Millionaire. First of all, I love trivia. Secondly, I am a tad bit competitive. Shocking, I know. And C, I am a geek about Meredith Viera. I’ve liked her since The View, I watch her every morning on The Today Show and I think she is one of the smartest, "with it" women out there right now. It was going to be exciting to be on the show with her. So I started buffing up on my trivia. I limited my reading material for the week to Trivial Pursuit cards while on my couch, the train and any other public place. And I will admit to reading Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader entitled Big Book of Facts, during more private moments. I was trying to absorb as much trivia as possible! Greg told me about Cash Cab on the Discovery network, so I started watching that, which led right into Jeopardy at 7:00. I was a fact-absorbing machine. I was only going to get this chance once, so I needed to be prepared. In the meantime, Millionaire was sending me questionnaires to fill out about myself, a total of eight pages, which were going to be potential “interesting” tidbits about me for Meredith to inquire about. I had a little too much fun filling those out and I hope the producers don’t think I’m crazy. But even if they did think that, they wouldn’t be far from the truth. I was crazy about being on the show!

So the big day arrives. I didn’t sleep the best the night before. I kept having dreams that I was really confident about an answer and then I’d walk away with nothing. I was hoping that didn’t happen. I had to be at the studio at 7:00 am, hair and make-up ready. That is all I knew. So I was up at 5:00 am, at the studio by 6:45. I had planned on text messaging my phone-a-friends throughout the day to keep them abreast of what was going on – like if I’d be going up soon, if it looked like I would actually shoot, etc. But I quickly learned on arrival that we were about to go into CONTESTANT ISOLATION.

Contestant Isolation: This meant there would be absolutely no contact with the outside world. If I absolutely had to make a phone call, one of the producers would do it for me. Beyond that, we were to label our bags, unpack our wardrobe choices, label them with premade name tags, put anything small/important in an assigned locker and then leave the room. Everything in that room was locked away and we could only gain access again with the accompaniment of a producer. Same thing with going to the bathroom – there always had to be a producer with us, at all times. I had brought my Trivial Pursuit cards and two newspapers but I was told I could not have any of that. In fact they discouraged us from “talking trivia” with each other, since it might make an uncomfortable environment or bring down morale if any one of us knew more than the others or if people started getting competitive. So it was a little like kindergarten, but they make the rules so I can win the money, so there wasn’t much I could do.

There were eight other contestants and there were also “two and half” from the day before. Millionaire shoots five shows per shooting day, so they tend to overbook contestants, since they don’t know how many will actually get to play. So the two and half were scheduled to shoot the day before and the “half” started his game when they ran out of time the day prior. “The day before people” were separated from us newbies and we only briefly met them at lunch, before shooting began. I’m getting ahead of myself. Back to my contestant group: The nine of us got along right away and we definitely made it a fun environment despite all the crazy rules. My fellow contestants were Elyssa, Patrick, Bob, Thom, Jennifer, Julia, David and Ross. So when our five episodes start airing, cheer them on!! We were an energetic, nervous group and it is true how a high stress situation brings people together. Even if the stress is a fun, kinetic kind. We had breakfast and then we were all taken away individually to meet with our producers. Each of us are assigned a producer to prep us for our time on camera and to go over the questionnaires we filled out and to basically “handle” us once we play. So I had Stephanie and she was lovely and helpful. Then we were all brought back into the green room for our legal briefings. First we had a long sit down with the show attorney to go over the forms that we had read on our own and signed. She had to reiterate everything that was within these pages so that we were totally aware of what we signed. That lasted about an hour and we all started to get nervous. And then Meredith’s producer came in to welcome us and go over game play. He talked about what to expect once we get in the chair, game strategy, etc. And to make sure that we were nervous, which we were – yes they wanted us to be nervous. And that lasted about an hour. And then the show’s publicist came in to go over all the publicity that will go into our appearance and what to expect and find out about our local newspapers so they can promote our appearance on the show. So it was a long morning of legal stuff and nerves climbing. Then we were taken down to the studio so we could all practice sitting in the chair, which was more complicated than you would think, and then we were sent to lunch at 10:30 am.

Lunch was Mexican food, which is a favorite of mine, but not on a nervous stomach and not at that early in the morning. So I hardly ate anything and everyone regretted later any of what we did eat. And then it was back to the green room to get into our wardrobe, get touch-ups on hair and makeup and basically gear up to shoot. They showed us a video of one of their favorite contestants so that we could get ideas about how to conduct ourselves on the show (excited, playful, etc) and then…after legalese and butterflies in our stomachs and contestant bonding….the games began!

We had a live feed into our green room to watch the games and as soon as that started we all got nervous. I started breathing deeply and then asked everyone if they wanted to engage in a yoga move, “sun salutation,” to calm ourselves down. Instead of everyone laughing at me, they actually all got up and joined in - all except Bob and Patrick, who I think found us humorous/crazy. But it helped and we were ready to watch! Now, here is an important fact to note that I have failed to mention: We were not told the order in which we were going to shoot. We were kept in the green room and then one by one we were taken downstairs, back stage. BUT! There were three contestants on deck, at all times, and just because you were just brought down did not mean that you were third in line to go. No, no, no. If you were just brought down, you could be next to go. Or you could be brought down and then not go until 4 shows later…which is what happened to me. I was the third from our group to be brought downstairs. So I’m hyped up and nervous. The three of us on deck are sitting there, watching on a tiny black-and-white monitor the game that is being played. We can’t hear anything because there is no sound on this tiny monitor and so we can only sit there, play along and hope the best for our fellow contestants. And one by one, people were playing. And then three shows were already shot and I was still waiting and it was time for our first break. They do the taping day in two parts, three shows from noon until about 2:30 and then two shows from around 3:30 to 5:00, with a new audience. To keep things fresh. So we were corralled upstairs again and fed again, but I was still too nervous to eat.

My emotions are running high, I’m starting to get really tired and then they take us back downstairs. They’re playing some good music in the studio, so I’m dancing and singing to keep my energy up. Then shooting begins again and we are taken to our little waiting area backstage. Again, one by one, contestants are going into the chair, more people are being brought downstairs to keep the “three contestants on deck” quota and I am resigning myself to the idea that I’m not going to shoot today. I am feeling good though because I know the answers to a lot of the questions that are being asked throughout the day. And every time a question comes up and I know the answer before the choices are revealed, I am always right. I have a lot of gut feelings going on and I’ve decided to trust my instincts once I get out there. But, they are well into taping the last show of the day and it is nearing 5:00 and I’m thinking I’m going to have to come back to shoot on another day. And then, Bob’s game play looks like it is coming to an end and all the producers that are in the back with us are standing, getting ready to call the next contestant’s name. I am relaxed, nonchalant, “cool,” and then suddenly they say:

And our next contestant is going to be…MEAGAN!

Suddenly, I’m not relaxed at all! I’m excited, I’m breathing heavily, I’m geared up and I’m ready to go. Then, I get the cue to go out onstage and…I run out!! I’m so excited, I think I may be screaming, I don't know but I do know I gave Meredith a hug and then…I climbed into the hot seat. And the rest is a blur. Besides, I’m not able to tell you anything beyond that point, anyway. But, I will tell you this:

I will tell you when to tune in!!

Which might not be until January, but it will definitely be worth watching…hopefully it will be surprising and fun!

Until then…

The question is, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Yes, as in the show. Here's the story: I got tickets to the taping of the show today and you can show up early and take the test to see if you can maybe be on the show. So I decided to give it a shot. About 100+ people took the test, which is 30 questions long, multiple choice and you only have 10 minutes to take it. You fill out a good ol' fashioned scan tron, cross your fingers and see what happens. Then you sit through tapings of three shows and at the end of the third show they start to call out the names of those who passed the test. Out of the 100+ that took the test, only 20 of us passed. I am actually surprised I passed - it was hard! They don't tell you what percentage you need to pass, but I know I got at least four wrong. I need to do some studying! Because after the tapings, those who passed the test stick around so that the producers can interview them. Depending on how the interview went and what they think of my application, I will find out in a few weeks if I have made it into the contestant pool. So I'm not on the show yet, but I'm crossing my fingers again and I'm going to start buffing up on my trivia because who DOESN'T want to be a millionaire?!

I am dripping with sweat and I don't sweat. Really. It's rare for me to sweat at the gym, you know really drip with sweat, so something is clearly wrong with me. But what is wrong with me has nothing to do with my sweat glands. I have literally just ran around NYC in dark jeans, flip flops and a t-shirt in 82 degree weather, all in the hopes that I am MAYBE seen for an audition. I've been up since 6:00 AM so I could come stand in line at an open Equity call (EPA) for some off-Broadway theatres. I got to the line at 7:00 AM, that was stretched out on the sidewalk because they don't actually open the doors until 8:00, and I was still number TWENTY on the non-Equity list. Since I am not a union member, I have to wait to see if the casting director gods deem it worthy to see non-Equity members. Once they have seen all the Equity members, they MAY see non-Equity. Equity members are also standing in this 7:00 AM line with me - they are just guaranteed an audition time slot once inside. Non-Equity members have to sit in a long narrow hallway, on shallow hard benches, and wait patiently to see if maybe, just maybe we'll be seen. When I got to the line I learned that the audition that I had come for was not the only audition being held today. There were two other shows with roles that could possibly be suited for me. So I signed up on all three sheets. At 10:30 we learned that the "combined audition" - the one that I had come for - "...would NOT be seeing non-Equity members today. Thank you, you may drop off your headshot." I did leave a headshot, even though it felt a little like I was throwing it away, but that is neither here nor there. The other two shows were seeing non-Equity though, so I sat and waited. One show would see people, maybe, after lunch. The other show was calling in non-Equity throughout the late morning and when we broke for lunch at 1:00, I was next on the list! So chances of me being seen looked very promising. I rushed home for a quick lunch and checked my email. I saw the breakdowns and there was a role I was right for! It was at CBS for CSI and I was just a reader last week for Jodi Angstreitch, one of the casting associates there. So I threw together a quick submission and ran out of my apartment at 1:45. Luckily, everything was in a 6 block/3 avenue radius but when you're on foot, that can take a little longer than expected. I get to the CBS building, which has a doorman, at 1:50 and I tell the doorman I have an envelope to leave. He tells me I have to leave it with the messenger center, which is outside, around the corner, down six very steep (and for some reason, wet) steps to a black, barely marked door, where I then have to go down more stairs into a badly lit hallway to a mail room where a bunch of guys are apparently hanging out. I look into some bins that are sitting on the counter and the hanging out guys say, "Go ahead," as in leave my envelope in the bins. I ask, "For CBS?" because they don't seem the most trustworthy of men and they are like, "Oh no, you have to leave it with that guy." They point to the other side of the counter and this gentlemen, in a nice doorman-like suit has gotten up to accept my envelope. For some reason this makes me feel a little better. So I drop it off and then run because now it is 1:59, I am on 52nd and 5th and I have to be back at 46th and Broadway in exactly 1 minute. I've resigned myself to being slightly late, but not too late, because I don't want to miss my call. I'm actually hoping Equity members are there and auditioning, to buy me some time. If I'm not there when they call my name, then I get crossed off the list and have to sign up again at the bottom. I'm making good time, I'm weaving in and out of tourists, I'm feeling optimistic as I start up the stairs at the Equity building and then I see a guy who was sitting near me in the morning and he is coming down the stairs. Oh no. I probably missed my time slot! And he points at me and says, "1001?" (which is the name of the play) and I reply, "Yes, " still optimistic. He says, "They just announced they aren't going to see anymore non-Equity today." Of course they aren't, since I was next on the list!, I'm thinking, but I just say, "Thanks," and continue up the stairs. And now I'm sitting in the narrow hallway, which is still lined with nearly 50 other hopefuls just like me. Because they are still casting for one more show. And maybe, just maybe, they'll see me.

**Side note: I left the audition hallway about 45 minutes later. It wasn't looking good for us non-Equity types. So basically, I didn't audition at all today. But I sure put forth one hell of an effort. Hopefully that will count for something someday...

What is up with the “new” shows coming out in the fall that are blatantly based on novels but with a few differences so they don’t look like total rip-offs? I got really excited when I saw previews for New Amsterdam on Fox because I loved the book Forever, by Pete Hamill. I thought it was an excellent idea to make that book into a television series or to at least take the premise from the book and expand upon it. But the more previews I saw (and once I imdb’d it) I realized that the tv show was not based on the book – it was just ripped off from it. First of all, the main character gets his immortality from an American Indian on the tv show not from an African shaman, like in the novel. That was my first big tip off. And then there’s Journeyman on NBC. It looks like a lame rip off of Audrey Niffenegger’s book The Time Traveler’s Wife, which is my current favorite book and if you haven’t read it yet, then get ye to a Barnes and Noble! The book is currently being made into a film, with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams in the main roles. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston (pre-Bradgelina) bought the rights before the book was even released to the public. Brad is producing the film, which I couldn’t be happier with the casting of. Actually, I could be happier because I could be playing Clare, instead of Rachel, but since I’m a fan of Rachel and hoping my career is going to be along the same trajectory as hers, I’ll allow it. Seriously, Rachel burst onto the screen in 2004 with Mean Girls and The Notebook and she was 28 at the time. Which means I should start shooting my first big project by next year and then “burst” around the same age. I’d be ok with that. Oh, and to answer your question: Yes, I will be watching both New Amsterdam and Journeyman, you know, just to see what other premises they steal or if they end up creating something unique. The most original ideas are the one you steal. Yes, I stole that quote from my husband – who undoubtedly heard it somewhere else.

I am hesitant to write this blog because I recently learned that my in-laws print out these things to show to family and friends. And this blog is about a burlesque show that I’ve been volunteering for the past three years. But before you alert the press, it’s not what you think! I’m not one of the dancers – I wish I were built for that! The dancers are actual Broadway performers that shake what their mama’s gave them for charity. I just sell t-shirts…I mean, I have to dress to match the evening, but I am dressed. With that being said…

On June 17 I worked at Broadway Bares, which is a fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. It is a crazy evening, full of body glitter, pasties and thongs. This is my third year volunteering as a “merchandise girl”, which means I get to wear a little outfit and strap on a large box full of t-shirts and calendars and then I stroll the area, selling my wares. I am a cigarette girl of the modern fundraising era. The box is really heavy and I have to wear heels (not my normal footwear choice), so by the end of the night, I’m hurting. But I’ve also gotten major ego boosts from all the gay men telling me I’m gorgeous, so no pain, no gain! Broadway Bares is basically a burlesque show full of gorgeous Broadway performers dancing in next to nothing in fun numbers that are loosely threaded together to be a show based on the theme of the year. This year’s theme was “mythology,” so all the gods and goddesses were out! It’s a campy, raucous time and I always have a blast! It’s like Halloween in the summertime, all to raise money for a good cause. Shake your bon-bon, indeed!

Well, my legions of fans, (and by legions, I mean handful. And by fans, I mean family and friends), here is the long awaited blog on my 2007 Tony Awards experience. I was hesitant to work it this year, mostly because it’s a really long day and I had already met most of the presenters this year the other two times I’ve worked AND I haven’t been able to see any of the shows this year. Plus, it was going to be tough to top last year’s experience since I got to meet Julia Roberts and ended up staying in touch with James Earl Jones. Having his voice on my voicemail was one of the more surreal moments in my crazy NY life so far. But, I digress. The point is: I went into this not expecting much out of it and of course, at the end of the day I was really glad I went. I had a FUN time. I was in charge of the presenters signing the posters again this year, which is the job I prefer because that way I get to meet everyone, not just a few. And they were using a ton of escorts this year, which meant there was going to be a lot of downtime. So I had a good “job”. Here are the people I got to meet:

Christina Applegate, Zach Braff, Harry Connick, Jr., Claire Danes, Jeff Daniels, Brian Dennehy, Taye Diggs, Fantasia, Harvey Fierstein, Carla Gugino, Marvin Hamlisch, Marcia Gay Harden, Neil Patrick Harris, Anne Heche, Marg Helgenberger, Judd Hirsch, Felicity Huffman, Mark Indelicato, Eddie Izzard, the cast of Jersey Boys, Melina Kanakaredes, John Kander, Jane Krakowski, Robert Sean Leonard, Patti LuPone, John Mahoney, Audra McDonald, Idina Menzel, Bebe Neuwirth, Cynthia Nixon, Donny Osmond, Bernadette Peters, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Harry Smith, Tommy Tune, John Turturro, Usher, Ben Vereen, Sam Waterston, Patrick Wilson, Rainn Wilson and Vanessa Williams.

I was psyched to meet Robert Sean Leonard. I used to be slightly obsessed with Swing Kids circa 8th grade and every time I’ve seen him in something since it is always worth watching. Maybe you’ve heard of a little show called House? He is an actor I really enjoy watching. And he was completely generous and a little overwhelmed by the gift lounge, which made him even more endearing.

Taye Diggs came through and remembered who I was. He said, “Haven’t we met?” “Why, yes, yes we have,” I replied. Then he said, “Or do you just look like Alyssa Milano? I bet you get that a lot.” Only since I was ten… sigh…

The highlight for me was getting to spend some time with Zach Braff. I actually escorted him through the lounge so that I could talk with him and we hit it off. It was such fun meeting him, since I love his work. Scrubs is great, Garden State is great, the soundtrack is great. I would love to work with him one day. A lot of times, meeting with agents or casting directors, you get asked, “What kind of roles do you see yourself playing?” Natalie Portman’s role in Garden State is my go-to answer. She was sweet and funny and quirky and dark and light. Well-written and well-executed and a role I would have loved to have done. So Zach, if you ever bump into this blog in cyber world, remember that I should be your next leading lady. Just a thought...

Other fun stuff: Marg Helgenberger gets best dressed from me, with Carla Gugino in a close second. Felicity Huffman was incredibly sweet. Harry Connick, Jr.'s daughters are very cute and he is cute with them and...that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

The fun part about working the Tonys is that I am such a huge fan of most that come through, BUT, since I’m “working”, I’m suddenly part of the crowd. So I can hang out and talk to James Earl Jones (like last year) or joke around with Zach Braff (like this year) and I’m just a girl. I’m not the giggling fan like I feel I am inside. PLUS, this is great practice. Because one day, I’ll be the one presenting at an award show, being escorted through the gift lounge and even though I will have “made it”, I’ll still have to play it cool, hanging out in the green room with these people who are suddenly and truly my peers. And there will be another escort doing my old job and feeling like she is giggling inside when she talks to me. And I’ll know exactly how she feels. Because believe me, it is a surreal experience sitting backstage at Radio City Music Hall as the Tonys are being broadcast live, hearing the musical numbers, seeing the presenters go on and off stage and then exchanging hellos with Donny Osmond.
